Last month, 23-year-old Eric Rivera Jr. was found guilty of second-degree murder and armed burglary for the 2007 shooting death of former Washington football team safety Sean Taylor.
On November 4, a Miami jury reached a verdict after a 16-hour deliberation period and found Rivera guilty. Initially, Rivera pleaded guilty, but changed his plea during the trial arguing that “Miami-Dade police detectives coerced him into falsely confessing to [Taylor’s] murder.” Rivera testified that one of the other five suspects that were there at the time, Venjah Hunte, was the one who actually shot Taylor. Hunte had already pled guilty to second-degree murder and burglary charges and made a deal for a 29-year prison sentence with the prosecution. All of the suspects were teenagers at the time of the shooting.
Now, AP reports that a sentencing date has been set for Rivera, on January 23, 2014. Rivera could face life in prison.
