‘Tis the season for a lot of things (yelling at relatives, stressing over shopping, overeating) but really it should be about giving.
One way to do that is through the USPS’ Letters to Santa program, which connects children with people who can afford to buy them gifts. But in D.C., there are still over 100 letters that haven’t been picked up yet.
Antoinette Myers, a post office employee and elf-in-charge for D.C., says that over 200 letters have been picked up. But with the deadline to drop off gifts fast approaching, there are still many Santas needed. And if no one picks up the letters? They just don’t get answered.
Feel awful? Want to help? Head to the post office at 900 Brentwood Road NE Thursday or Friday between 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. to pick up a letter. (We know this is during office hours, but, unless your boss is pre-ghosting Scrooge, they should understand.) You’ll be asked to present a photo ID and fill out a form. Once you have the letter, shop for any or all of the gifts asked for. Then return the wrapped packages to the post office on Thursday, Friday or Monday. Santas are also asked to pay for the postage. Here’s a list of all the steps in the process.
Anyone with further questions should contact Myers at 202-636-2244.
