Trigger warning: This post contains details of alleged domestic violence.
A D.C. police officer has been indicted on a charge that he attempted to kill his wife in their Maryland home.
Officer Samson Edwards Lawrence, a 23-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police Department, “is charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder, two counts of assault and two counts of possessing a dangerous weapon with intent to injure,” the Post reports. Lawrence allegedly attacked his wife for not being able to locate screws to install a TV. From a release put out by the Office of the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney:
He allegedly became angry with his wife because she told him she didn’t know where the screws to hang the projector were. At that point, Lawrence allegedly grabbed a can of Lysol and began spraying it in the victim’s face every time she said something. Then, when Lawrence’s wife refused to make him something to eat, he allegedly began pushing her.
Lawrence’s wife attempted to call 911, but Lawrence allegedly grabbed the phone from her and would not let her make the call. She then tried to leave the house, but Lawrence followed her and allegedly pushed her to the floor in their living room, picked up a metal light post and began to hit her in the head while she lay on the floor.
He’s also accused of holding knives to his wife’s face and throat, and threatening to cut her.
Lawrence posted $200,000 bail in November after he was arrested and was released. He’s been placed on indefinite suspension without pay, according to the MPD, and a court date for the murder charge is pending.
In recent months, one MPD officer has been accused of running a teenage prostitution ring and another was accused of taking nude photos of underage girls. The latter, Marc Washington, was pulled out of the Potomac River and pronounced dead.
