Metro made changes to bus service on select routes yesterday as part of its slow but steady initiative to make service just a little more reliable.

According to a release, new bus services—including additional routes and increased bus frequency —launched yesterday in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. It’s all part of Metro’s Better Bus initiative, a $5 million investment in service that aims to “improve on-time performance and reliability while reducing crowding for customers.”

So, for those who regularly ride Metro buses, here are some highlights of service changes that took effect yesterday, December 29:

  • Increased weekday midday and Sunday service on the X2 Benning Road-H Street route.
  • Saturday service will be increased on the 52, 53, 54, 14th Street route to reduce crowding.
  • Increased service on the 70-Georgia Avenue-7th Street route weekdays from 7 p.m. to midnight, Saturdays from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sundays from 8 p.m. to midnight.
  • New Route 26A service between East Falls Church and Annandale via Culmore and Seven Corners.
  • MetroExtra 79 service seven days a week between Archives and Silver Spring.
  • Extension of Route K9 service to the FDA-Federal Research Center.
  • Extension of Route 29N service from Fairfax Circle to Vienna Station.
  • 12 additional trips on routes 29K and 29N and new, faster limited-stop service along Duke Street between King Street Station and Oasis Drive.
  • Selected bus stops along routes 96, 97, W4 and X3 will be combined with other nearby stops to improve service.

There’s even more info here, if you’re curious about the nitty gritty details of the changes to service at all the bus stops affected by this initiative.
