A couple months ago, the Capitals announced that they’ll finally host a Winter Classic in 2015, and now it’s looking like a venue for that game has been found.

Although it’s not yet confirmed, a source told ESPN that the 2015 Winter Classic will be played at Nationals Park:

NHL officials recently visited three D.C.-area venues: RFK Stadium, FedEx Field and Nationals Park.

While there has still not been any official decision, the source said it’s likely that Nationals Park — home to the Washington Nationals — will be the chosen venue because of possible scheduling issues with the Washington [football team] at FedEx Field and because Nationals Park presents a relatively new venue.

Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, this seems more than likely, considering that Nationals owner Mark Lerner is a minority partner in Caps majority owner Ted Leonsis’s Monumental Sports and Entertainment. Sure, a Winter Classic at Nats Park will be cool, but the game would been cooler if it was played on the National Mall.

The Caps will play the 2015 Winter Classic against a yet-to-be-determined opponent on New Year’s Day, 2015.
