Washington football team head coach Mike Shanahan has been fired, following a rough season that ended with the team in last place in their division with only three wins.

As the team confirmed, Shanahan, along with his staff, were fired this morning following a meeting with owner Dan Snyder. Since Shanahan was hired as Washington’s head coach in January of 2010, he’s led the team to a mediocre 24-39 record in four seasons. News of his firing this morning comes as little surprise as the tension between him, Snyder, and Washington’s star quarterback, Robert Griffin III, became public after last season. According to ESPN, Shanahan almost quit after last season because of the “special treatment” Snyder reportedly gave to RGIII, which didn’t sit well with Shanahan.

“Fans deserve a better result,” Snyder said in a statement. “We will focus on what it takes to build a winning team.”

“I believe we’re in a situation that’s better off today than it was four years ago,” Shanahan said at a press conference this morning. Shanahan also thanked the players, fans, and Snyder for the opportunity, saying that this is a “great organization.”

Now that Shanahan is gone, let’s all start wildly speculating as to who the next head coach will be. I’ll start: Danny O’Shea.
