Potty Mouth is a four-piece band that make jangly guitar rock that never goes out of style. Formed at the all-women Smith College in Northampton, Mass., the band follows in a long line of bands like The Vivian Girls and Bleached, making fun indie pop with surf-rock inflections. The band’s debut album Hell Bent was one of last year’s best, and the band’s show tonight at DC9 is not to be missed. “Black and Studs” is a punchy number off the album. Singer Abby Weems’s speak-singing anchors the track in pure C-86 bliss. Though the song came out last year, it would not sound out of place on any number of Slumberland compilations from back in the day.
Potty Mouth play tonight with Radiator Hospital and Priests at DC9. Tickets are $8.
