Troubled taxi payment system provider Gleike has been ordered to cease operations, according to a D.C. Taxicab Commission release.
Since cabs were required to have credit card readers connected to one of eight payment systems providers installed last year, drivers have complained about late payment. According to the DCTC, “Gleike has agreed to return its Certificate of Operating Authority due to its failure to meet DCTC regulations following financial problems that have jeopardized the required payments to their customers, the payment to the District of collected passenger surcharges and other issues.”
This leaves more than 700 cabs without the ability to accept credit card payment until they can have a new system installed. Affected drivers must schedule an appointment by the end of this week to avoid fines. Another PSP will accept these customers and will not charge them installation fees.
While drivers won’t be penalized, Gleike may be: “Gleike’s default on its passenger surcharge payments to the District may also result in DCTC’s exercising its authority to make a claim against the $50,000 bond posted by Gleike when it was approved as a PSP.”
A recent random test found that the majority of cabs have credit card systems installed.
