Earlier today, 33-year-old D.C. man Charles Smith was indicted for first and second degree child abuse and motor vehicle manslaughter, according to a release from Prince George’s County State Attorney Angela Alsobrooks’ office.
The indictment relates back to an accident on May 9 of last year that killed Smith’s 4-year-old son and injured his 7-year-old stepdaughter. According to a release, Smith was driving on Bladensburg Road in Cottage City, Md. when he came to an intersection at 38th Avenue and attempted to pass two cars by crossing into the opposite lane.
Because of this maneuver, police say, he struck two vehicles, mounted a curb, struck tow utility poles, a tree, and then crashed into a brick retaining wall. His 4-year-old son was ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of his injuries, while Smith’s left arm was nearly severed. His 7-year-old stepdaughter only suffered minor injuries. Smith was also charged with numerous driving infractions, including driving while impaired, reckless driving, and negligent driving.
