JP Caceres. Via his GoFundMe page.Since December 19, friends of local bartender JP Caceres say he’s been held at an immigration detention center in Farmville, Va.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for Caceres’ legal fees so he’ll be able to attempt to stay in the U.S.
As some of you may know, but most of you probably don’t, JP has been struggling with immigration issues for almost 13 years. JP was born in Bolivia and came to the United States in 2001. He arrived in the country and began to work legally on a work visa. His work visa subsequently expired, and he has been attempting to obtain US citizenship since 2010. He is not a legal U.S. citizen. No matter your views on our country’s immigration policy, we have created this page because we know your views on JP.
Already, the page has raised over $11,000 of a $7,500 goal. But as the organizers note, $7,500 is the minimum he’ll need “to get in front of a judge and potentially prevent his deportation.”
According to a 2012 Huffington Post interview with Caceres, he owns the D.C.-based Let’s Imbibe Consulting, serves as president of the US Bartenders Guild and has lived in D.C. for 14 years. He’s worked with José Andrés, and is the mixologist behind menus at Del Campo and MXDC. He left Bolivia after quitting law school, according to a 2010 Post interview.
