FRIDAY

COMEDY: Some of the area’s funniest women will be performing in a special comedy showcase at the Velvet Lounge (915 U St. NW) tonight. Will you laugh? The forecast is likely. Will you have a good time? Also likely. Will all proceeds go to benefit the Young Women’s Project? You bet. The lineup for the evening includes Kandace Saunders, Hillary Scofield, Dana Fleitman, Erica Johnson, LizaBanks Campagna, and DCist’s own Valerie Paschall. Tickets are $5 and starts at 7:30 p.m.

BAD FRIENDS: Local record label Bad Friend Records is celebrating their two year anniversary tonight at the Black Cat’s main stage. To celebrate, Bad Friend Records bands Raw Feels, Drunken Sufis, and Tereu Tereu—which features label founder Ryan Little—will be rockin’ out. Their may even be cake involved! Tickets are $12 and doors open at 9 p.m.

POLITICAL CARTOONS: Art Soiree is hosting its fourth annual Political Cartoon Exhibit “Democrats vs. Republicans” at the Ritz-Carlton in Georgetown (3100 South St. NW). Today and tomorrow, the show will present political cartoons from Kevin Kallaugher, editorial cartoonist for The Econimist and The Baltimore Sun. To make things more interesting, tonight is Democrats night and tomorrow is Republicans night, which will feature cartoons and events programmed specifically to each political party. Tickets are $10 for each night or $15 for both. Starts at 8 p.m., more info here.

SATURDAY

PANDA: The day you’ve been waiting for is finally here: Bao Bao will make her public appearance. Just maybe avoid the Metro trying to go see her. The Zoo opens at 10 a.m., but you might want to get their early, lines will probably be long.

SLIDE: The giant ice slide at St. Elizabeths East Gateway Pavilion’s opened last weekend, but the weather was pretty crummy so you probably didn’t go. Thus, you should go this weekend, because if you can’t enjoy a giant ice slide, you probably hate fun. The slide will be open from noon to 5 p.m. St. Elizabeths East Gateway Pavilion is at 2700 Martin Luther King Ave. SE. Free.

COMEDY: Shaw’s Tavern (520 Florida Ave. NW) is hosting another comedy brunch show on Saturday. Headlining is Jono Zalay, along with Randy Syphax. Starts at 2:30 p.m. Free with a suggested donation of $10.

MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY:…isn’t until Monday, but the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library (901 G St. NW) is hosting its Collective Voices 18th Annual Literary Tribute to Dr. King on Saturday. Guests include D.C. Poet Laureate Delores Kendrick and Malcom X Drummers and Dancers. Free, starts at 1 p.m.

SUNDAY

BENEFIT CONCERT: Just like in the good ‘ol days of harDCore, there’s a benefit punk show at the building that used to be the Wilson Center (it’s now the Next Step Public Charter School, located at 3047 15th St. NW). Local rockers Passing Phases, Trophy Wife, Big Mouth, and Sunwolf are playing. Cost is a $5-$10 sliding scale and all proceeds benefit the From Service to Justice Conference. Starts at 7 p.m.

FICTION READING: Did you read Washington City Paper’s excellent fiction issue last week? No? Well, if you missed it (or you want to hear the stories from the people who wrote them), you’re in luck: WCP is hosting a reading at Politics & Prose. Novelist Louis Bayard, and contest winners Koye Oyedeji and Rion Amilcar Scott will be reading their stories. Free, starts at 5 p.m.

FREE MOVIE: The National Gallery of Art is screening the Washington, D.C. premiere of the documentary The Stuart Hall Project. The film chronicles the life of Stuart Hall, the Jamaican-born sociologist and theorist who is considered the “founding father of cultural studies.” Screens free at the NGA’s East Building Auditorium at 4:30 p.m.
