The D.C. Taxicab Commission announced today that they’re accepting applications for new L-Tags—registration for authorized limousines and sedans in the District.

According to a release, “passenger demand for sedan service and the increased number of eligible drivers who recently completed driver training have driven the need for more vehicles to meet the transportation needs of the market.” The needs of the market most likely referring to the rising popularity of car-hailing services like Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar.

“The proliferation of digital dispatch services to connect riders and drivers has caused DCTC to respond to this service option to ensure the supply of vehicles can meet the demands of the marketplace,” DCTC spokesman Neville Waters writes in a release.

Drivers who are looking to get an L-Tag must complete and submit a Public Vehicle For Hire Registration Form and a One Stop Form to the DCTC, as well as pass a “for hire” vehicle inspection by the DMV. All the relevant info about qualifications can be found here.
