Police are investigating a traffic fatality from early Friday morning wherein the driver of a trash truck struck and killed a pedestrian.
According to police, the incident happened at approximately 4:28 a.m. at the intersection of 13th and I streets NW. Police say that the driver of a 2007 Mack trash truck was traveling westbound on I Street NW when he turned left onto 13th Street NW and struck a pedestrian walking across the crosswalk. The driver of the truck continued for about a half of a block before realizing he had struck someone and then called 911. The pedestrian was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police are withholding the pedestrian’s identity while they pin down the next of kin, and the crash is still under investigation. The victim is the third person killed by a vehicle in D.C. this year.
