It’s official: Wunderkind Ezra Klein is leaving the Washington Post for a “new venture,” and he’s taking some people with him.
Fellow Wonkblog writer and KnowMore runner Dylan Matthews and Director of Platforms and former BlogPost blogger Melissa Bell* will also leave. Both Wonkblog and KnowMore still belong to the Post. Poynter has the full memo announcing their departure.

Earlier this month, the New York Times reported that Klein approached publisher Katharine Weymouth with the idea for a new website “dedicated to explanatory journalism on a wide range of topics beyond political policy” that would have been affiliated yet separate from the Post. Weymouth and Daddy Warbucks Jeff Bezos declined to give Klein the eight figure investment he was reportedly seeking. According to Politico, his “news organization” will “staff more than 30 people on the editorial side alone.”
We’ll update once we learn what the new venture is.
*Disclosure: Bell was one of my editors at the Post when I wrote for BlogPost.
