Rest assured residents of D.C., the new Supercans are coming.
Mayor Vince Gray announced yesterday that he had secured funding for the Department of Public Works to start passing out new 96-gallon Supercans, as well as new 64-gallon recycling cans, next month.
Gray first announced in November that he planned to start distributing the new gargantuan trash receptacles at the beginning of this year, but his plan hit a snag when the D.C. Council unanimously rejected the $9 million request to fund the project. But Gray says that he found the money to move forward with distribution of the behemoth waste collectors.
But where exactly did this funding come from? “Contingency cash,” the mayor’s spokesperson Pedro Ribeiro tells DCist. It’s been more than ten years since D.C. residents got new rubbish barrels. A release states that “proper containerization of trash is a major defense against rats and other pests,” and we all know where we stand in the war against rats.
