A couple of late 2013 openings suggest the climate in Washington is hot for osteria-style restaurants. Alba Osteria and Osteria Morini, both with big name chefs behind them, are the two latest kitchens in D.C. dishing up elevated yet simple, regional Italian food. But one of the first big closings of 2014 is another restaurant of that casual Mediterranean ilk. Osteria Elisir, chef Enzo Fargione’s restaurant at 427 11th Street NW, has served its final porcini lasagnette as of last Saturday’s dinner service.
Fargione announced the closing on food chatter website DonRockwell.com this afternoon. The Washington Post reports that the closing came as a surprise to the chef after investors decided Elisir was not meeting financial expectations.
Fargione opened the space as Elisir Restaurant in 2011, eventually modifying the concept to Osteria Elisir to strike a more casual tone. He formerly served as chef at the now closed Teatro Goldoni.
