Sylvan Esso has not released much in the band’s two-year existence; they only released their debut 12″ “Hey Mami,” last year. But all of that is about to changes: this summer, the band will release their as-of-yet-untitled debut album. Sylvan Esso’s sound combines minimalist hip-hop beats with soulful vocal melodies courtesy of singer Amelia Meath’s. With a penchant for earworm-y hooks and insanely catchy beats, I predict big things for the band this year.
The album hasn’t been officially announced—other than the vague mentions of a May release date—but the Durham, NC trio have released the first taste of the new record with the single “Coffee,” which is due to drop March 25th via the band’s new label, Partisan Records. “Coffee” is a slower track that rides a funky beat of bells, clicks, and keyboard hits. It’s more subdued than the band’s other tracks, but “Coffee” is nonetheless a standout.
Sylvan Esso play tonight with Ploy at DC9. Tickets are 10/adv $12/dos.
