D.C. has long history of angular, experimental rock bands, and Golden Looks is merely the latest to carry on the torch. Each of the trio’s members have cut their teeth in the scene playing in bands like Hiding Places and Friends of the Library before embarking in Golden Looks. The experience pays off. While singer Julia Nova’s bands have been poppy in the past, they’ve rarely been this aggressive. With her foil Nestor Diaz and drummer Kristof Aldenderfer, Golden Looks blends pop, post-punk, and millennial tension in near-perfect unison. “Who Rewrote The Lines?” is a track from the band’s demos and has a kind of Q and Not U-meets-Dismemberment Plan vibe to it, with Julia Nova singing tougher and more aggressive than her previous twee-leaning bands.
Golden Looks play with Hospitality and Soccer Team Saturday night at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Tickets are $12.
