Jordan Lee has been making music for a while by himself or with a large cast of other musicians under the name Mutual Benefit. The band released its first single all the way back in 2009, and over the years has released EPs and singles. The band released their debut album Love’s Crushing Diamond last year to massive fanfare and positive reviews. The recording of the album began in 2011 and was recorded in many places reflecting Lee’s transient lifestyle. Mutual Benefit makes lo-fi chamber-pop like early Sufjan Stevens and Grizzly Bear before both went off the rails with experimentation and fuller sounds. The years spent laboring on the release can be heart in “Advanced Falconry,” a slow orchestral number with perfectly arranged strings recalling an indie-movie soundtrack. Lee’s voice is understated and has an androgynous quality, especially when he hits high notes.
Mutual Benefit play with Teen Mom Wednesday February 5th at the Black Cat. Tickets are $12.
