After being found by the Metropolitan Police Department and taken to the National Zoo for treatment, the female owl was transferred to the rehabilitation center City Wildlife. (A Zoo spokesperson told DCist they usually don’t treat wildlife, but made an exception for the Snowy Owl.) According to an update from City Wildlife, a veterinarian found blood in her mouth and “internal trauma is suspected.”
In addition, a fractured toe was identified as well as tattered feathers and dehydration. We have hydrated the owl and placed a bandage on the toe to immobilize it and have given antibiotics and pain medication. Once the owl is stable we plan to take radiographs to evaluate the broken toe and to assess other possible internal injuries. The overall prognosis of the owl is guarded.
A later update said the owl, who was first spotted near McPherson Square in mid-January, is in stable condition.

Update: City Wildlife says the owl is still in stable condition and “continues to receive pain medication, antibiotics, fluids, and food.” They are waiting for the results of blood work before taking radiographs: “In the meantime, the owl will continue to be kept quiet, cool, fed and closely monitored.”
