Less than a week after being hit by a Metrobus and SUV, the Snowy Owl spotted recently in downtown D.C. is improving.
City Wildlife, the only wild animal rescue and rehabilitation center in D.C., says the owl was “bright and alert” this morning. The Snowy Owl’s prognosis is still guarded, but it’s “acting more and more like a healthy owl every day.”
At a Friday press conference reported on by the Post, the Metropolitan Police Department detailed the work of three officers to save the owl.
The officers said they were on patrol at 14th and K streets NW about 12:30 a.m. when [officer Othneil] Blagrove spotted something unusual. Blagrove, a rookie, told [officer Lauren] Griffin, who was helping to break him in, that he had spotted the bird in the roadway on 14th.
Griffin said she at first thought it was a bag, but its movement convinced her that it was, in fact, the owl. Then the light changed, the officers said. A Metro bus, and then an SUV, struck the white-feathered owl, which had been spotted in recent days in multiple locations downtown.
For the next two hours, the officers tracked the bird until they eventually trapped it near the W Hotel. It was then taken to the National Zoo for treatment.
A Saturday update from City Wildlife reported that the owl is anemic. The non-profit is seeking donations to help care for the bird.
