Here, watch this video of the National Zoo’s new gray seal pup, because after recent bad news surrounding D.C.’s animal celebrities, it’s what you need.
The seal pup, which was born on January 21, has been in the holding area of the seal exhibit on the American Trail ever since its birth. National Zoo officials say animal keepers have been hand-feeding the female pup as her mother, Kara, has not been lactating enough and the pup wasn’t gaining weight. “Our animal care team is always prepared to hand rear or hand feed an animal if they need to,” Ed Bronikowski, senior curator at the Zoo said in a release. “In the first days of this pup’s life we did not see her gain as much weight as we would have expected. It is still a tenuous time, but the pup’s weight is now heading in the right direction. We celebrate every pound that she gains.”
The pup now weighs in at 60 pounds—up from her original birth weight of 35 pounds—and as evident from the video, is quite the curious baby. The zoo says that “although she may not be fully lactating, Kara is nursing her pup and is an attentive mother.” Kara and her pup are spending their days swimming around the holding pool and napping on the beach. Which is, really, what we’d all rather be doing.
