A man was arrested by Secret Service agents this afternoon after he attempted to climb a White House fence, according to multiple reports.
According to the Washington Post, the man arrested was carrying two bags, which authorities deemed suspicious. The man’s arrest prompted police to shut down a portion of Pennsylvania Avenue NW for nearly an hour, as the man’s bags were being investigated. As NBC News reports, security officials say there’s “nothing that suggests the bags are dangerous but that this process is normal protocol.”
The incident occurred at about 2:45 p.m. near the north perimeter of the White House, which was temporarily on lockdown. Both Secret Service agents and U.S. Park Police officers pulled the man down before he climbed over the fence.
