Behold: The design ideas from three architecture teams for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, which will undergo a major renovation.

Three teams — Mecanoo/Martinez + Johnson Architecture; Patkau Architects/Ayers Saint Gross with Krueck +Sexton; and STUDIOS Architecture/The Freelon Group — were selected in December, and their renderings will now be on display at the MLK Library, neighborhood libraries and online. The ideas will also be presented next Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe-designed library in question. You can comment on the designs here.

In a Request for Qualifications last year, the D.C. Public Library said they were seeking “a design for the library of the future.”

“While we cannot know definitively what that future library will be, we do know that it will have great spaces for children and for adults, for individuals and for groups; space for physical and for virtual collections. We expect inspiring design that will accommodate great flexibility in library uses and in technology.”

DCPL again said “no decisions have been made on the type or extent of the renovations or additions to the library.” The Urban Land Institute previously proposed that the building be turned into a mix-used development with two additional floors.
