Last year, soul singer Sharon Jones was diagnosed with bile duct cancer on the eve of her fifth album’s release. Thankfully, Jones has since recovered and her cancer is in remission. Jones and her band, the Dap-Kings, have been collaborating since 2001, and have since put out six studio albums. Their latest, Give the People What They Want, is an apt title for a record delayed for six months. Fans need not worry about Jones as the record is exactly what they want: a brisk collection of Motown and Stax Records-esque soul that is sure to set the stage on fire. “Stranger to My Happiness” plays like a lost Supremes track, with a rumination on heartbreak that’s expertly belted by Jones.

Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings play with Valerie June tonight at the Lincoln Theatre. Tickets are $40.
