A service that boasts the ability to deliver groceries to your door in under an hour launched in D.C. today. Well, part of it.

Instacart — which, at the moment, will deliver a minimum of ten dollars’ worth of food from a Harris Teeter for a fee — serves most of D.C. and Arlington. Locations in D.C. east of the Anacostia River — both Wards 7 and 8 — are currently not served.

“This is only our initial launch coverage area,” Aditya Shah, Head of Expansion at Instacart, said in an email. “We will expand into new neighborhoods in the weeks to come. We tend to look at requests from customers in specific zip codes when evaluating the expansion.”

Shah says Instacart conducts formal surveys to gauge interest: “We also allow customers to enter their email and zip code on our website so we can notify them when we launch into their neighborhoods.”

Only a handful of full-service grocery stores are located in Wards 7 and 8. Safeway (which requires at least a $49 purchase) will deliver groceries to all Ward 7 and 8 zip codes, as will Giant’s Peapod (which requires at least a $60 purchase) and the local Relay Foods (which has a $3 small order handling fee on orders under $50).

Instacart, on the other hand, only requires a minimum purchase of $10. Two-hour delivery costs $3.99, while one-hour delivery costs $14.99. Instacart delivers between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m, and deliveries can be placed through their website or mobile app.

In addition to adding neighborhoods, Instacart says they’ll add grocery stores in the coming weeks. Readers who enter the code “DCist” get a $10 credit plus free delivery.
