Some sad news out of the National Zoo today: Their female giant Pacific octopus has died.

The octopus, named Pandora, was five years old, which is old for giant Pacific octopuses. The Zoo says the normal lifespan for such creatures is typically three to five years. Pandora came to the National Zoo in November of 2011, when she was one-and-a-half years old.

Zoo officials say that they noticed around February 10 that she began to act strangely. “She exhibited very little muscle tone and began lying at the bottom of her tank—common signs of old age in a cephalopod,” a release states. While giant Pacific octopuses weigh up to hundreds of pounds and have an arm span of more than 12 feet, Pandora weighed a little more than 15 pounds, with an arm span of nearly eight feet.

Zoo officials are awaiting a final pathology report that will provide more information.
