D.C.’s political heavyweights, as well as top media and business executives and celebrities, headed to the White House last night for a state dinner held for French President François Hollande.

Hollande, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama (in Carolina Herrera) were joined at the head table by TV’s Stephen Colbert, Jackie Robinson’s widow Rachel Robinson, journalist Robert Kaplan and designer Duro Olowu, among others. Other famous guests included Bradley Cooper, Mindy Kaling, J.J. Abrams and Mary J Blige, who performed “Ain’t Nobody.”

Obama toasted Hollande, joking about his own lack of French language skills and saying, “Viva la France, God bless America, and long live the alliance between our great nations.”

The highlight of the evening came thanks to the clever seating of Vice President Joe Biden next to Veep‘s Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who plays Vice President Selina Meyer on the HBO show. From a White House pool report:

[Talking Points Memo’s Sahil Kapur] spotted Julia Louie-Dreyfus, sitting near the press section, and asked her what her favorite part of the dinner was. “Look who I’m sitting next to,” she said, pointing to Vice President Joe Biden. The VP swiftly interrupted our conversation: “Hey, stop screwin’ around, she’s my date!” He promptly burst out laughing and said, “Just kidding.”

Just kidding, you guys.
