It’s well-documented that D.C.’s unemployment rate has been steadily declining in recent years, but a new Gallup poll reveals that our city has the highest payroll to population rate in the country.

According to the Gallup poll, D.C. lead the nation’s P2P rate in 2013 at 55.7 percent, followed closely by North Dakota (52.2 percent), Nebraska (51.4), and Minnesota (50.7 percent). The poll’s metric tracks the percentage of the adult population (18 and up) in a given state (and D.C., because, well, sigh) that are full-time employees working at least 30 hours a week.

As for the difference in P2P rates in different states, Gallup says that “several factors, including the overall employment situation and the population’s demographic composition” are at play. Of course, in recent years, D.C.’s unemployment rate has been declining as more and more young people—“millennials” as they’re known to some— have been flocking to the city, boosting D.C.’s population rate. Indeed, as Gallup writes, “states with large older and retired populations, for example, would have a lower percentage of adults working full time.” And recently, D.C. has seen its fair share of baby boomers opting for city life to settle down in.
