A huge greenhouse planned for Southeast, D.C. will supply produce to local Giant stores.

BrightFarms partnered with D.C. in May 2013 to build a “100,000 square-foot, state-of-the art greenhouse farm in Ward 8” near the Giant at 535 Alabama Avenue. The project will create 20 full-time jobs, according to the BrightFarms, and 100 construction jobs. Construction is set to begin in May and completion is estimated for November, according to a spokesperson.

When finished, the greenhouse — which will be designed, built, and operated by BrightFarms in partnership with the D.C. Department of General Services and Anacostia Economic Development Corporation — will produce up to one million pounds of food each year.

“Giant is committed to serving our community by delivering the highest quality produce at the best value,” Gordon Reid, president of Giant Food, said in a release. “This unique partnership with BrightFarms will benefit the local economy while providing our customers with fresh, locally grown and sustainable produce year round. We’re excited about what this new partnership offers for our region.”

According to Jamie Miller at Giant, approximately 30 of their grocery stores in D.C., Northern Virginia and the immediate Maryland suburbs will source the Ward 8 produce.
