Here’s a staggering statistic: Only about 25 percent of plays in D.C. this season were written by women, Dramatist Guild rep Gwydion Suilebhan tells Variety.

It’s that statistic highlighting the gender disparity in D.C.’s theater scene that led to the creation of the Women’s Voices Festival—a massive theater festival that will produce only work by female playwrights to nearly 50 D.C. area theaters in the fall of 2015.

The festival—which was spearheaded by Arena Stage and Signature Theatre artistic directors Molly Smith and Eric Schaeffer along with representatives from Ford’s Theatre, Woolly Mammoth, the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Round House Theatre, Studio Theatre, and more—will take place in September and October of 2015 and will feature a large number of plays written by women held in nearly 50 venues across the city, including The Kennedy Center, which was just added to the list of participating venues, the Post reports.

“Female writers are too often underrepresented in the theater,” Schaeffer tells Variety. “We’re joining in this festival to showcase and promote them.”
