Rogen—who, along with his wife, Lauren, started the Alzheimer’s fundraiser Hilarity for Charity—testified as an “expert” witness (“thank you for the opportunity to be called an ‘expert’ at something, because that’s cool,” Rogen quipped) in a hearing on the economics and current state of research of Alzheimer’s disease treatment and prevention. But beyond his normal schtick, which prompted many laughs from the crowd, Rogen told a pretty poignant story of how his mother-in-law was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimers’s Disease in their mid-50s.
“After forgetting who she and her loved one were, she forgot how to speak, feed herself, dress herself, all by age of 60,” Rogen said of his mother-in-law. Rogen said he was here today because he “personally witnessed the massive amount of financial strain this disease causes,” as well as “to show people that they’re not alone.”
Rogen also discussed the work his charity has done to raise money and awareness of Alzheimer’s Disease and severity of the situation. “The situation is so dire that it caused me, a lazy, self-involved, generally self-medicated man-child to start an entire charity organization.”
