In January, organizers announced the inaugural Funk Parade is coming to U Street in May. And now, they released a funky promo video reminding us that this thing is actually happening, and from the looks of it, it’s going to be big.
According to the parade’s website, they’ve got supporters from Councilmembers Jim Graham and Anita Bonds, WJLA, The Kennedy Center, and dozens of local businesses around the U Street Corridor. In a new promo video, organizers give a taste of just what this whole thing is going to be. “A celebration of U Street, a celebration of the city, a celebration of music, and a celebration of the spirit of funk,” the text reads during the video. In it, a funky groove from D.C.’s Fort Knox Five (with guest vocals from Ian Svenonius) plays while members of the local dance collective Urban Artistry busts moves in Edge’s Barbershop, Lettie Gooch, and Miss Pixie’s.
“It’s homegrown and awesome and fun,” Funk Parade organizer Justin Rood says, “just like we hope the Funk Parade will be.”
Shit will be getting funky on U Street on May 3. Get ready.
