A cold emergency alert has been activated in D.C. due to the snow and frigid temperatures.

Both the West End Library and Sherwood Recreation Center will open at 7 p.m. to serve as co-ed warming sites. Here are the alert night and overflow shelters open now until tomorrow morning:

  • Banneker Recreation Center, 2500 Georgia Avenue NW; Men; Open now until 7 a.m.
  • Columbia Heights Recreation Center, 1480 Girard Street NW; Men; Open now until 7 a.m.
  • Kennedy Recreation Center, 1401 7th Street NW; Men; Open now until 7 a.m.

  • Emery Recreation Center, 5801 Georgia Avenue NW; Men; Open now until 7 a.m.
  • Guy Mason Recreation Center, 3600 Calvert Street NW; Women; Open now until 7 a.m.
  • Benning Park Community Center, Southern Avenue and Fable Street SE; Families; Open now until 8 a.m.
  • Greenleaf Recreation Center, 201 N Street SW; Families; Open now until 8 a.m.

    This is the 25th snow event D.C. has experienced since November, city officials told reporters this morning. The city was $2.5 million over the snow budget as of the last storm, and we’re down to 11,000 tons of salt.
