A nasty accident near the Capitol early this morning landed the driver in the hospital and caused a few street closures and traffic delays, as Roll Call first reported.

According to U.S. Capitol Police, units responded to the report of a vehicle crash at the intersection of South Capitol and D streets SE at approximately 3 a.m. USCP says the vehicle was traveling at high speeds northbound on South Capitol Street, crashed, and went airborne into a tree. Not many details are known at this time, but USCP says the driver was transported to an area hospital.

As of 9:25 a.m., the following streets remained closed as the investigation and cleanup continued:

  • Washington Avenue, SE and D Street, SE (East Bound)
  • New Jersey Avenue, SE and D Street (West Bound)
  • Washington Avenue, SE and South Capitol Street, SE (West Bound)
  • South Capitol St., SE from Washington Ave to C St., SE
  • Roll Call’s Hannah Hess was on the scene and tweeted the following photos.
