Two more streetcars will make an appearance on H Street and Benning Road NE this week, which the District Department of Transportation is warning will lead to traffic congestion.
The streetcar that’s been parked on H Street near the Hopscotch Bridge will be switched with another one by the D.C. Streetcar Operations and Maintenance Team today.
First, a second Inekon streetcar vehicle will be delivered to the H/Benning corridor to begin its System Integration Testing. Then, the streetcar vehicle that has been undergoing testing on the H/Benning corridor since December will be transported back to the Testing and Commissioning Site on South Capitol Street SE to receive scheduled maintenance.
On Wednesday, another streetcar will make its first appearance on the corridor, and by the end of that day, two vehicles will be undergoing testing.
According to a release, “added congestion is expected on South Capitol Street SE, Firth Sterling Avenue SE, Howard Road SE, Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE, Good Hope Road SE, Minnesota Avenue SE and NE, as well as H Street NE, Benning Road NE and Oklahoma Avenue NE.” Buses that travel on the corridor (looking at you, X2) may be delayed.
Officials have long declined to provide an exact date for start of passenger service. But streetcars are expected to rolling by the end of this year.
