The NCAA men’s basketball tournament, better known as March Madness, is upon us, and two local universities are going: George Washington and American. Georgetown will be playing in the second tier National Invitation Tournament, while the rest of the local schools will be at home watching TV.
We already knew American was going to the dance as they won the Patriot League tournament last week. The Eagles (20-12, 13-5 Patriot) were given a 15-seed (out of 16) and will face a tough, disciplined Wisconsin team in Milwaukee. A 15 seed beating a two seed is exceedingly rare—it’s only happened seven times since 1985—but you may remember that Georgetown was the victim of 15-seed Florida Gulf Coast University’s “Dunk City” last year, so it’s not impossible. However, American would need to play almost flawlessly and Wisconsin would need to do the opposite for the Eagles to move up to a matchup with BYU or Oregon. The numbers seem to agree, with Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight giving AU a 7 percent chance against Wisconsin. The game is Thursday at 12:40 p.m. ET on TruTV.
GW (24-8, 11-5 A-10) had long been considered a lock for an at-large bid to the tourney thanks to the team’s strong resume, a tough conference, and wins over teams like Creighton, Maryland, VCU, and UMass. The only question was what seed the Colonials would get, with GW faithful worrying they’d get a tough one (like 2006, when a 27-3 GW team ranked number six in the country and received an eight seed, playing UNC-Wilmington and then Duke in Greensboro, N.C.).
This year, GW got a nine seed playing in Raleigh against a fast Memphis team—a fair seeding and a fair opponent. Can GW win? The team has experience against up-tempo teams this year; playing VCU three times and going 1-2, and some analysts have picked the Colonials into the Sweet 16. However, FiveThirtyEight gives GW a 45 percent chance against the Tigers. The teams have a connection, too, as former GW forward David Pellom transferred to Memphis last year. The game is at 6:55 p.m. on Friday on TBS.
Up the hill from Foggy Bottom, Georgetown (17-14, 8-10 Big East) wasn’t expected to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tourney, and they didn’t—teams with losing records in conference rarely do. They did, however, receive a bid to the NIT, where they’ll host West Virginia on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at McDonough Gymnasium, their historic home court on campus. The place is a throwback and would make for a cool place to see a big-time college game. Here’s the full NIT bracket.
However, Georgetown did get the last laugh for a few hours, as the official NCAA tournament shirts featured their logo instead of GW’s. They’ve since been fixed.
As for Maryland, George Mason, and Howard? Well, they’ll have to watch the games on their own as the schools didn’t receive invites to the NIT or the lower-tiered CBI or CIT tournaments.
Here’s the full TV schedule for the NCAA games, and also the bracket. Stay tuned for the annual DCist March Madness pool too!
