“1+1=?” by Armando Gallardo, who’s looking for the couple in the photo.

Photographer Armando Gallardo was on assignment for the Huffington Post D.C. during last year’s Sweetlife Festival when it began to rain.

“Now, picture this,” he writes. “Torrential rain starts falling down, crowd starts freaking out, a sea of raincoats and umbrellas start to form and as I start running for cover, I see a couple who [couldn’t] care less about the fact that the Sweetlife Festival is about to become a big mud fest.”

Gallardo snapped a photo of the couple in a deep embrace, lips locked. A photo that this year was one of six to win the Best In Show prize for the 8th Exposed DC show, which was formerly associated with this site. A photo that will go on display tomorrow at the Long View Gallery.

But Gallardo doesn’t actually know who the man and woman are in the photo. Now he wants to find out.

He launched a site, Finding John and Jane Doe, devoted to finding the couple so he can give them a print of the photo and, perhaps, get the answers to the questions he still has. Gallardo’s asking people to use the hashtag #FindingJandJ to help find them.

Reached by email, Gallardo said he’s curious every time he looks at the photo “because I know absolute nothing about them. It’s crazy to think their photo is gonna be at the ‘Exposed DC’ exhibit beginning Wednesday, thousands of people will see it but that they, the couple, are completely oblivious of the fact that someone snapped their shot.”

When asked if he fears the couple, if found, will have a negative reaction to the photo, he replied, “I would completely understand if they did but, you see, that’s the beauty of the photo. No one can really recognize them. If they decide to keep it a secret, I will respect that, but it will be one hell of a story, that’s for sure.”
