Lanier discusses fatal shooting of homicide suspect.
A man suspected in a recent homicide was fatally shot by law enforcement officials this morning, police Chief Cathy Lanier told reporters.
The exchange of gunfire took place around 6:15 a.m. in the unit block of K Street NW. Lanier said members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force — which includes the Metropolitan Police Department and U.S. Marshals — were attempting to locate a suspect with a warrant in an open homicide, which occurred recently. As officers approached the location where they believed the suspect was, Lanier said, the suspect “came outside with a firearm and opened fire on the officers.” An exchange of gunfire resulted in the suspect being struck.
The suspect was later pronounced dead and is expected to be publicly identified within the next hour. No officers were injured.
Lanier could not detail which homicide the man was suspected in, but said that information would be released.
Update: In an email to resident, Lanier said the man killed was suspected of killing 19-year-old Tykia Dickerson in the 3600 block of Jay Street NE on February 27. “Unfortunately, the suspect opened fire on MPD police officers, who returned fire and killed the suspect,” Lanier said. “While this is not the outcome we hoped for, we sincerely appreciate the support and assistance provided by the Sixth District community in bringing this case to closure.”
The man was later identified as 19-year-old Daquan Hendrix of Hyattsville, Md.
