Ward 4 Councilmember Muriel Bowser defeated incumbent Vince Gray in yesterday’s Democratic primary election, but of course that wasn’t the only election going down.

Perhaps the biggest upset of the night was Brianne Nadeau snagging the Ward 1 Council nomination from longtime Councilmember Jim Graham, with a whopping 58.68 percent of the votes. Graham was first elected as the Ward 1 Councilmember in 1998 and has firmly held the position since. She’ll face Bryan Weaver for the Council seat in the November general election.

While Nadeau will certainly bring a fresh perspective to the D.C. Council, elsewhere in the Ward debates, all the incumbents held on to their positions, with the exception of Ward 6. Anita Bonds held on to her At-Large Council position with 52.85 percent of the votes and Phil Mendelson will remain Council Chairman with a predictably overwhelming 81.47 percent of the votes over challenger Calvin Gurley. Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie will remain in the position, taking in 78.77 percent of the votes.

As current Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells was seeking the mayoral seat instead of his current one, the two candidates vying for his position was Darrell Thompson and former Wells Chief of Staff Charles Allen. Allen won the position with 57.95 percent of the votes.

In the U.S. shadow senator election, which many described as quite the petty affair between candidates Paul Strauss and Pete Ross, Strauss bested Ross with 59.55 percent of the votes.
