FILM: As part of its “Cool Hand Paul” film series, the National Theatre is hosting a free screening of Paul Newman’s 1956 classic Somebody Up There Likes Me, at the National Theatre’s Helen Hayes Gallery (1321 Pennsylvania Avenue NW). Starts at 6:30 p.m.

FOOD TALK: Carla Hall, the co-host of ABC’s The Chew and a “fan favorite on Bravo’s Top Chef All-Stars will discuss recipes from her new book Carla’s Comfort Foods: Favorite Dishes from Around the World at Sixth & I Historic Synagogue (600 I Street NW) tonight. MUSIC: Brooklyn bar-rock heroes The Hold Steady are touring on their new album Teeth Dreams and hitting the 9:30 Club (815 V Street NW) tonight. Opening the show are Lansing, Mich. alt-rock trio Cheap Girls (think The Lemonheads meets The Replacements). Show is sold out but there are plenty of tickets on Craigslist if you’re dying to go (and you should). Starts at 8 p.m.

THURSDAY: Artist Mika Rottenberg is giving a talk at The Phillips Collection as part of its Art Talk series. “New media artist Mika Rottenberg uses exaggerated images of the female form in absurdist settings to confront issues of class, objectification, and labor.” Tickets are $20 for non-members and $8 for members.
