The Washington Monument is once again naked, as the process to remove 500 tons of scaffolding from the obelisk ended this weekend. But as one D.C. landmark returns to business as usual, another is preparing for the same treatment.

Yes, scaffolding has begun to creep up the Capitol, as a project to repair and restore the dome gets underway. From a mid-March update from the Architect of the Capitol:

The last chance for “scaffold-free” photos and video of the U.S. Capitol is approaching, with the best opportunity within the next two weeks. Views of the Capitol West Front (National Mall side) will be obstructed first followed by the East Front (plaza side).

Throughout March, workers may be visible on the Capitol roof in preparation for work on the Dome. Beginning late March scaffolding will begin to be constructed from the West Front grounds and across the terrace to the roof of the Capitol.

The Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol will close from Saturday, April 12 through Monday, April 28, 2014, and visible scaffolding from the Capitol roof up the Dome begins during this period. The first scaffolding to be visible from the East Front Plaza is expected as early as May.

Like the Washington Monument — which is expected to reopen on May 12 — the Capitol dome will be illuminated at night during the two-year project.
