As promised, the National Park Service donated the usable venison culled from the 106 deer killed this year to a local food bank.

To be exact, NPS donated 1,600 pounds of venison to the D.C. Central Kitchen on top of a previous 1,700-pound donation earlier this year. “We use the venison as we would any other meat protein that is either donated to or purchased in recipes such as chili, bolognaise, meatloaf, or stew,” the Central Kitchen said in a blog post. “The meals are distributed across the city by our own fleet of vehicles, and served with a starch and green vegetable.”

Between January and March 31 of this year, 106 were shot “safely and without incident” from Rock Creek Park as part of a program to reduce the overall population and restore balance to the wooded area.

Hundreds of pounds of venison was also donated to the D.C. Central Kitchen last year by NPS.
