In an age where indie/alt-rock has gotten so serious (did you hear that last Arcade Fire record? Sheesh), it’s refreshing to see certain bands embrace absurdity, silliness, and immaturity. Take, for instance, the last Parquet Courts record, which revels in its stoner-slackerdom. Or anything Diarrhea Planet has done, really.

But what’s even more refreshing than that is when a band can successfully infuse the lighter sensibilities of songwriting with weightier issues. Enter local post-punk quartet BRNDA, whose debut album Brenda, slyly skirts between the absurd and the serious. That’s most evident on the track “Super Dave,” which seems to tell the story of a superhero named Dave battling the evil Dr. Freebase. But if you look at it another way, it’s a song about a guy battling a crack addiction. Either way, it’s a great song.

The band, which consists of guitarist/vocalist Dave Lesser, guitarist/vocalist Alex Kozen, bassist/vocalist Jonee Whitefoot, and drummer/vocalist Leah Gage, plays the kind of jangly power-pop/post-punk that reminds me of early Talking Heads and Devo, especially on tracks like “Make a New Friend,” “Mr. Fish,” and “Everybody Hates Jim.”

The whole album is available to stream on Bandcamp and BRNDA will play a record release show tonight at the Rock & Roll Hotel with The Walking Sticks and The Sea Life. Doors at 8 p.m., $12.
