Tuesday, April 22
Union Station (40 Massachusetts Avenue NE): Speakers from NASA, NOAA and Washington Gas Energy Services will gather for a free all-day event at Union Station.
Langley Education Campus (101 T Street NE), 6-8:30 p.m.: Mayor Vince Gray and city groups will hold a meeting to discuss the Sustainable DC Plan, released one year ago. A progress report will be released. Anacostia Watershed Society, Capital Area Food Bank, Casey Trees, DC Sun, DC Sustainable Energy Utility, Going Green Today Do It for DC! Challenge, Groundwork Anacostia, Neighborhood Farm Initiative and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association are scheduled to attend.
The Capitol and National Mall between 7th and 9th streets: The Cowboy and Indian Alliance will protest the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline by camping out on the National Mall: “The encampment is a final attempt to get the Obama Administration to recognize the severely negative impacts the pipeline will have on American people and lands. Farmers, ranchers, and tribes from along the pipeline will join the protest along with celebrities and social activists such as Daryl Hannah, Neil Young, and the Indigo Girls to bring awareness to the lives that will be affected by the pipeline, if it is approved.” Kicks off at the Capitol at 10:30 a.m. Ranchers and indigenous leaders will then ride horses (!) the the Mall, where the Indigo Girls will perform at 12:30 p.m.
Friday, April 25
U.S. Botanic Garden, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: The U.S. Botanic Garden will celebrate Earth Day with “cooking demonstrations with seasonal produce.” “Representatives of environmental organizations from throughout the region” will be in attendance.
Saturday, April 26
The White House, 10 a.m.: The Cowboy and Indian Alliance’s event ends Saturday with the painting of a tipi for President Obama. A procession to the Capitol will follow.
