Anacostia’s Big Chair Coffee & Grill is planning to expand.
In a notice of public hearing posted by the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration, Big Chair’s owner, Ayehubizu Yimenu, has applied “for a substantial change to [her] license.” In a phone call with DCist, Yimenu’s brother, Bantamlak Yimenu, says that the cafe wants to add a 16-seat outdoor summer garden outside the cafe, as well as a license for nightly entertainment, including live music.
Big Chair opened in 2010, had some financial troubles, and re-opened in February. Yimenu says but he hopes the new additions will attract more regular patrons. “We’re hoping to get more publicity,” he says. Big Chair already has a liquor license from ABRA and with the change to their current license, Yimenu will be able to serve alcoholic beverages in the outdoor seating area.
The public hearing date for Big Chair’s proposed plans is June 30, and Yimenu says he hopes to open the summer garden about six weeks after that.
