After eight years of working with just guitars, drums and keys, Wye Oak needed a shift. The Baltimore band’s 2011 record Civilian was their biggest to date. But after a long tour, the band became bi-costal with singer Jenn Wasner staying in Baltimore and drummer Andy Stark moving to Oregon. In between records, Wasner released a synth-pop album with Jon Ehrens as Dungeonesse, and the synths and tunefulness of that record carry over to Wye Oak’s latest album Shriek. Wye Oak ditches guitars for glittering keyboard textures and pulsing drums. Wasner’s voice has never been this elastic and confident, and Stark proves he is a human drum machine.
“Glory” is the hard-hitting single from the record, and may be the only song on the record to feature guitars. It’s easily one of Wye Oak’s best songs and the strongest on Shriek.
Wye Oak plays tonight with Braids at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are $22.
