There’s certainly no shortage of places in D.C. to grab brunch on the weekends, but sometimes even the nicest spots have gross kitchens.

Unless you’re WUSA9 reporter Russ Ptacek, it might be hard to keep track of all the local restaurants to receive health code violations. Luckily, there’s now an iPhone app to tell you which area restaurants have dirty kitchens (note: WUSA9 has a similar app and database, which shows you which area restaurants have health code violations). Happy Kitchen—developed by Dotsquare LLC and currently available to download for free for iPhones and iPods—tells you exactly which D.C. restaurants have received health code violations and what for.

Pulling reports from the most recent D.C. health inspections, the app displays restaurants within a certain radius of your location and rates them on a cleanliness scale, using smiley faces: a very happy face means “no issues;” a happy face means “minor issues;” concerned face means “some issues;” and a frown means “severe issues.” Right now the app is only available for iPhone and iPod, and it’s not clear if it’ll come out for other smartphones.

When you click on a restaurant, the app provides links to full Department of Health reports, so you can see just how clean or nasty the kitchen actually is. Because nothing can ruin bottomless mimosas and tapas quicker than a side of rat poop.
