Leeds five-piece Eagulls are one of those bands that get passed over because of the idiocy of the name. It is a shame, too, because the band’s post-punk is fantastic. Eagulls’ self-titled debut record, released earlier this year, is gripping from start to finish. Influenced by The Cure, Public Image Limited, and Joy Division, the band brings both the style and substance of the post-punk ear while putting their own spin on the sound. “Possessed” is a wild ride starting with girding guitars that have a dream like quality and singer George Mitchell’s distinct howl.

Eagulls play tonight with Twin Peaks at the Rock and Roll Hotel. Tickets are $12.
