AFI Docs, the local film festival previously known as Silverdocs, will open in June with Hal Holbrook as Mark Twain and close with an examination of Roger Ebert.

Holbrook/Twain: An American Odyssey, a portrait of Hal Holbrook, who’s played Twain in a one-man show since 1954, will make its world debut on June 18 at the Newseum. Life Itself, Steve James’ comprehensive look at Ebert’s life, will close the festival on June 21 at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery.

“AFI Docs is the ideal festival to premiere our film, because both Twain’s writings and Holbrook’s one-man masterpiece remain strikingly relevant and timely observations of this wonderful and conflicted country of ours,” Scott Teems, director of Holbrook/Twain, said in a release. “The themes and ideas presented in our film align beautifully with AFI Docs, and we couldn’t be happier to premiere the film in Washington, D.C.”

Director Steve James said, “Roger loved documentaries and, as a critic, had a profound impact on the success of so many of them over the years. To be honored at one of the very best festivals devoted to the art form would have greatly pleased him.”

A full lineup will be announced in the coming weeks, and tickets will be available in June.
